WHITCHURCH V BRIDGNORTH 2pm K.O at Yockings Park
Bridgnorth travelled to Yockings park for a match we promised to be filled with fight and passion. The teams met two weeks earlier in a pre-season friendly finishing with an exciting 3-3 draw.
Both teams seemed up to the challenge but it was Bridgnorth who dominated the park early on. An improved formation by Bridgnorth proved successful creating space and some excellent passing in the centre of the field.
Within the first five minutes both Anna SORBOM and Jo BUTLER had a powerful attempt on goal but shot them wide. Becky DOWNING battled hard until a challenge which left her with a shoulder injury, causing her to leave the field. Bridgnorth continued there flurry of smooth passing and set Becky ALLEN on the attack, her final shot denied by the Whitchurch keeper, only to be followed up by SORBOM who placed the ball down the centre of the goal 1-0.
Whitchurch heads dropped at the sight of an early goal, leaving Bridgnorth to continue to dominate the play. At half time Bridgnorth were determined to improve on their early lead but in response, Whitchurch, following a half time talk upped their game...they emerged onto the pitch a more confident team, the Whitchurch we all know.
Whitchurch had several chances to equal the score but a tremendous effort by the Bridgnorth back three BUTLER, CRESSWELL and HARRIS denied them the luxury. An extremely valiant performance by Kirsty HAYWOOD and Gemma KAY prevented Whitchurch grabbing that goal they so desperately wanted.
Vicky HARPER the latest signing for the visitors was displaying her usual quality with a solid performance in mid field. Whitchurch more strong willed than ever made another attack towards goal, some great link up play created space for the pace of their forwards to steam through the Bridgnorth defence, leaving Alix Robinson to place the equaliser home...1-1.
Both teams fought hard for the remaining fifteen minutes with Bridgnorth having several shots denied. A late challenge by HAYWOOD saw Whitchurch with a free kick 25 yards out...Kerry WALKER stepped up and sent the ball flying high towards the visitors goal...again some solid defending blocked the latest attack.
A nail biting final few minutes saw both teams searching for that glimmer of light to sink the winner. The final score 1-1.
A great game...enjoyed by all.
