TGLFC v Whitchurch - 21st October 2007

This top of the table clash certainly did not disappoint as no.1 and no.2 in the table met at School Grove. The form books would say that Whitchurch should win this one, and such was the quality of the football in the second half that the game could have gone either way and the scene was set up for a nail biting finish.  It was the home side who took the lead 15 minutes into the game with a well taken strike from new signing Stacey Aitken, she received the ball out on the edge of the area and lashed her shot into the bottom corner. 1-0. The effervescent Jade Hill got her 11th of the season not long after.  Whitchurch bit back with Sarah Field scoring to make it 2-1. There was controversy when Kerry Walker also got the ball into the net for the visitors but was adjudged offside.  In the second half Whitchurch had numerous chances to make something of the game but unusually could not find the back of the net, this was partly due to some wayward free kicks and to some quite superb handling from TGLFC keeper Nat Edwards. Defender Nikki Mason found herself on an impressive run up field before she was robbed by the impressive Emma Lewis who raced the length of the field before firing her final ball wide of the target. In the closing stages of the game it was nervy stuff for the managers and spectators as chances went flying end to end, Whitchurch's last real chance to get something from the game come when Vicky Coleman fouled Hannah Thomas just outside of the box. Walker stepped up from 25 yards, and I swear that you could hear your own heartbeat as she kicked the ball but put her shot over the bar!
Yes this was a thrilling game, it was a fantastic game to watch and what an advertisement for County League Women's football. Surely one of these teams will win promotion at the end of the season, on which one I will not be placing any bets.  TGLFC were ecstatic, Whitchurch were very disappointed, but it can all change round in a week.  It's a funny old game as some famous old football player used to say!!!
