SHROPSHIRE WOMEN'S CHALLENGE CUP
TGLFC V WROCKWARDINE WOOD JACS
This clash of the day for the Telford sides saw TGLFC of the County League taking on 'The Jacs' of the west Midlands League in a game that was switched to Stirchley at the last minute, and was then played out in freezing and wet conditions thanks to the unexpected snow.
The Jacs attacked from the off, putting a shot just over the bar but it didn't take long for TGLFC to make their presence felt through Jade Hill who forced a superb save from Sarah Lloyd. The young winger went on to try her luck in front of goal several more times, thwarted by the brilliance of Lloyd's shot stopping.
It was going to take something special to get past the keeper and special it was when Claire Riekstins unleashed a 30 yard effort over the heads of everyone and into the net to give TGLFC the lead.
The Jacs fought back and made some impressive moves forward, winning 3 successive corners, but could not capitalize on their chances, partly thanks to the safe handling of the home keeper Nat Edwards. The closest they came to scoring in the first half was when Danni Chidlow latched onto the second of those corner kick and hit her shot just wide. The visitors probably felt a little aggrieved just before half time when Jess Keane was penalized for handling in the box after taking down Hill. Whether a penalty would have been awarded on a day with better visibility we will never know, but Vicky Harper stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, putting her team two up.
TGLFC created the better chances at the start of the second half, but The Jacs still got forward, but were let down by poor final balls into the box and some resolute defending by Stacey McAdam and Nikki Mason. At the other end hill was skipping through the defence to slip the ball to the industrious Leanne Moss. The opposite winger got her shot in but saw in ricochet back off the post and away to safety. A goal would have been no less than the winger deserved on the day, but it was not to be and instead she had to settle for winning her Manager's player of the match award.
There were calls for a second penalty when Lloyd slipped into the advancing striker Lou Smart, fortunately the Referee, who was in good form on the afternoon, took account of the worsening weather conditions and spared the keeper that problem.
The Jacs won a few kick when Nikki Mason took down the hard working Lisa Robertshaw just outside the box, the kick was well placed but TGLFC's defence cleared the danger. It was Robertshaw who looked to have got The Jacs back into the game with a lovely shot that dipped just too late and went over the bar.
Chick was quickly on the end of a through ball and looked well placed to shoot when a free kick was given against her for use of the shoulder. Hill was next to try her luck, jinking past the defenders before hitting the side netting.
As the weather worsened at the cold and wet conditions were taking their toll on both sets of players, TGLFC brought the fresh legs of Anna Sorbom into the game. The striker immediately caused problems, when she closed down a clearance the ball deflected off her and the Jacs were lucky to see it roll harmlessly wide. Her next touch saw her fire the ball agonizingly wide, but it was third time lucky for her when she took on the defence on the left and tucked a fine angled ball into the net to seal the tie for her side.
This game will be remembered as maybe the coldest, wettest game most players will ever find themselves in, but for TGLFC it will be remembered as the day they defeated their local rivals from the League above and put the spotlight firmly onto themselves and the Shropshire County Women's League.
