The opening game for the two new clubs to the League served up quite a treat and gave some indication of how exciting the Shropshire County Women's League threatens to be this season. The clash saw both sides playing some excellent football in a game played with great spirit and sportsmanship.
TGLFC controlled the first 30 minutes of the game and should have been comfortably ahead by the time that Wem, with probably their first serious effort of the game took the lead against the run of play. Alix Robinson was the player who latched on to a well placed free kick to take advantage of probably the Telford side's only defensive slip of the game. 0-1
The lead did not last long as the goal seemed to be a wake up call to TGLFC who struck back within two minutes with a goal that was spectacular and not just a little fortuitous. Helen Gordos will go down in history to be the scorer of their first ever league goal with a shot / cross that was executed a good 60 yards from goal, bounced and eluded the defence and keeper to hit the back of the net. 1-1.
In an explosive last ten minutes of the half TGLFC turned the game around with two superb Vicky Colman goals. Her first shot was blocked but she stuck to the task and made sure that her follow up beat the keeper. 2-1, her second was even better as Sarah Henn floated in the perfect corner for her to head over the stranded keeper 3-1.
The second half was a less frenetic affair with many of the players from both sides looking very tired from the exertions of their first competitive game of the season. Wem broke through on several occasions, only to be beaten by a strong TGLFC defence, who were in no mood to concede again. The visitors look a very exciting prospect for the rest of the season with the pace and endeavour that will set them in good stead over the coming months, Kim Rutter epitomising their never say die attitude with a hardworking and impressive display of football.
As the game wore on it was the home side who looked the more likely to score and as the final whistle approached they did just that with a lovely worked goal, finished off confidently by Swedish striker Anna Sorbom. 4-1.
My personal players of the match were not as easy to choose as I first thought, for Wem it has to be the excellent Kim Rutter, for TGLFC it could have been the athletic and tricky Jade Hill who gave 110 % for the cause, but I think my final vote would be for Niki Walker who was defensively solid at the back all afternoon and never put a foot wrong.
Final Score - TGLFC 4 - 1 WEM WANDERERS
