New league for Shropshire
Wednesday, 21 July 2004.
An exciting new development in women's football in Shropshire has just been announced, with the formation of the Shropshire County Women's Football League.
The league will commence in September. At present, six teams have indicated their desire to play in this league: Shrewsbury Town, Oswestry, Ludlow, Wem Bridgnorth and Whitchurch. Other teams that are still considering entering the league include Telford and Team 2000.
All new teams are now required to enter a County League before progressing through the Football Association pyramid.
A committee has been formed and all relevant officers have been appointed. This new league and the formation of a new under-16 girls league now gives Shropshire clear pathways for girls and women’s frootball.
Schools football sessions and promotion of the game for girls has led to a record number of players wishing to play the game and the formation of new clubs for the forthcoming season.
Over 600 players will take part every week from Under-10 to 12 to 14 to 16 to County League; a very significant number of female players for the county of Shropshire.
If any new clubs would like to join the league, please contact David Rowe, Shropshire FA Chief Executive before 10 August for registration details.
It is hoped that a cup competition named the Sir Steve Roberts Cup involving all the Shropshire County League teams and teams from adjoining counties will also take place during the season.
