Bridgnorth  Spartans v Whitchurch Alport
The Huddersfield Cup Semi Final - Sunday 10th February 2008

The first half of this semi Final was pretty much even as both sides created chances and both displayed some fine defending to keep the half time score at 0-0. The game opened with Nic Perry producing a fine turn and shot that the Whitchurch keeper did well to save. The home side's Becky Downing was then penalized for what looked like a perfectly good challenge and Lucy Ratcliffe stepped up with a powerful free kick that clipped the wall and was cleared to safety. Both sides had spells of pressure with Whitchurch having the clearer cut chances with many of them created by the excellent Sarah Field who was only thwarted by Bridgnorth's solid defending on several occasions. Chances came at both ends as the half came to an end but 2 brilliant saves, one for each keeper ensured an exciting second half showdown.
The second half got off to a fine start with both teams determined to get the opener, Bridgnorth's substitute let fly with a great shot almost form the half way line which forced the visiting keeper into a good  save. It was beginning to look like it would only take one goal to separate the teams, and the chance and the goal came for Bridgnorth. Nic Field was adjudged to have committed a foul right on the edge of the box, and Becky Allen stepped up with confidence to curl the ball into the bottom corner to take the lead. 1-0. Carly Whitehouse turned her marker to cross into the box but Hannah Thomas dealt with the clearance easily, and at the other end Rachael made a good challenge to keep Field from scoring. Whitchurch whipped in a testing corner but with Rosie Taylor in this kind of form between the sticks Bridgnorth didn't look like conceding from it. Lucy Ratcliffe had a great shot blocked bravely by Downing, before Perry popped a good effort just over the bar at the other end. Whitchurch stood firm with a crucial challenge inside the box to prevent what looked like a clear second goal for Bridgnorth and then when the attacking play went to the other end it was Rachael who ran from the right back to left back position to make a perfect challenge with the strikers shooting trigger already cocked. For the last ten minutes it was all Whitchurch as they attacked the Bridgnorth goal looking to find that chink that would give them the equalizer.  It never came though as a determined Bridgnorth booked their place in the final for another year.
