BRIDGNORTH V MADELEY - 19TH OCTOBER 2008

Bridgnorth knew this would not be plain sailing.  Following their defeat last week Madeley came out more determined and confident.  Bridgnorth fielded a strong squad but got off to a shakey start with some over zealous passing.

Madeley held their ground putting pressure on Spartans at every opportunity, their seemed little space for Spartans to move.  Vicky HARPER really dominated the centre of the field and it wasn't long before she saw her chance to power one home...1-0.  This goal lifted the game and with only fifteen minutes played Gemma KAY slotted home the second for the home side...2-0.

Jo BUTLER was relentless on the left wing, her extraordinary pace put the Madeley defence under strain but her attempts on goal were dampened by some great defending by the visitors.  Twenty five minutes played saw Abbie CRESSWELL start a run towards the goal and sending the ball flying into the back of the net...3-0.

Thirty five minutes in and a lapse in concentration by the home team saw Madeley capitalise on the opportunity...a scrambled error to clear the ball saw Becky THOMAS score for Madeley...3-1

Just before half time the Bridgnorth skipper Nic PERRY suffered a thigh injury requiring treatment but undeterred she returned to the field to finish the first half.

The second half saw Bridgnorth settle into their game.  The arrival of Helen GORDOS with fresh legs added to the strength at the back.  Some excellent passing between Jo BUTLER, Vicky HARPER and Rebecca ALLEN saw numerous chances come their way but never in the back of the net.

ALLEN never gave up and soon powered home two in quick succession...5-1

Nic PERRY was now really struggling with her earlier injury and was replaced by recent signing Leonie HUDSON.  Again some fresh legs injected that bit of sparkle and energy into the game.  She showed her ability to work with the squad and produced some lovely football.

HUDSON linked up well with HARPER and before long HARPER sank her second...6-1.  Gemma KAY always a presence took on the Madeley defence solo and was rewarded with her second...now 7-1.  Rebecca DOWNING keen to show her ability further up field came out of defence to right wing.

An error by Madeley saw the opportunity for Bridgnorth to increase their lead with a free kick...taken by DOWNING, powered into the top left hand corner...a fantastic free kick and her first of this season...8-1.

DOWNING celebrated in style before pressing on the defence again.  She used her long powerful stride to outrun the opposition and slide the ball past the keeper...9-1
An extremely enjoyable game...Madeley battled hard throughout and never let their heads go down....making Spartans fight for every goal.
